Reading: Breadcrumbs, by Anne Ursu. This is a middle grade book that's apparently inspired by the fairy tale "The Snow Queen." With the snowy atmosphere and cover, I figured I should try to read it before spring gets here. :) I'm liking it so far...it's nothing spectacular but it's getting more intriguing.
Knitting: Though I'm still working on my sweater, I decided to go ahead and cast on for my new shawl. I'm using the Boneyard Shawl pattern and knitting with this domestic wool that I spun. I rarely knit with bulky yarn so it keeps surprising me how quickly this shawl grows. The black section is finished, and I've made a good start on the gray...I think the shawl might turn out bigger than I expected. Also, I didn't think through the needle situation and it's already nearly too bulky for the 32" cord in my interchangeable set, so I've had to order a longer cord.

I don't knit with bulky yarn enough...but with the amount of time it takes me to finish a project I probably should be using it more! This is a lovely shawl!
ReplyDeleteI love knitting with fingering weight yarn, but sometimes it is nice to have a project that works up quickly. :) Thanks!
DeleteThe shawl is lovely. As Heather, I don't knit with bulky yarn that much. In fact... I don't think I ever have; however, I do like this shawl and I'll have to check out the book also.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I've only knitted with bulky yarn four or five times since I started knitting. :)
DeleteWhat a gorgeous shawl! You will be wearing it in no time! It looks perfectly warm and squishy!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just hope it gets finished quickly enough to be worn before it gets too warm. :)
DeleteI am perpetually impressed by knitters who use wool they spun THEMSELVES. Talent.
ReplyDeleteIt is a pretty special feeling, but I'm a firm believer that not only can anyone learn to knit, but anyone can learn to spin! :)
DeleteBoneyard is a nice pattern. It will be a beautiful shawl. The sweater I am working on is bulky weight and it actually hurts my hands after a while. It will take me a while to finish this one!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a good basic shawl! Knitting on this shawl hurts my hands after a while, too. I'm not used to size 10.5 needles, and knitting with such thick yarn seems to take more effort. :)
DeleteI like thicker yarn because it makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something. Bulky is hard though.
ReplyDeleteI agree! My comfort zone is definitely worsted weight. :)
DeleteLove your shawl!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI think I'll need to cast on one of my planned sweaters soon, the yarn keeps staring at me! Love your shawl, sometimes it's nice to use some dark colours. And the book sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I've realized lately that I don't have any black, gray, or white knitted accessories. So hopefully having a neutral shawl will be a good thing. :)
DeleteThe book looks good and the shawl is very pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
DeleteI knit up a cowl with super-bulky yarn last fall and I just could not believe how fast it was done! I could've completed it in a day, but I was enjoying the knit and the yarn so much that I stretched it out a bit. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to have a project like that every once in a while! :)
DeleteBreadcrumbs has been on my list for a while; it was a NPR read and I heard the interview with the author. It sounded interesting.
ReplyDeleteI love shawls that turn out big. So comfy!
It is pretty interesting so far, though I don't think it's going to be a new favorite for me. :) Me, too! As far as I'm concerned, a shawl can't turn out too large.
DeleteLooks like you're going to have a cosy, thick shawl. The book cover is very seductive I do love good cover art!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like it! I love pretty covers, too, and this one is cute.
