This afternoon, me and Mom went to see "Tangled." Can you say adorable? Spoilers may follow.
Yes, I am 19 years old and still love animated movies. Some of them, anyway. The classic Disneys and all Pixar. I do not like the cheesy, forgettable animated movies that are so common now (we saw a preview in this movie for "Open Season 3." Please...the first one wasn't any good. Now they've done #2 and #3?). I like animated movies that are sweet and clever and just as appropriate for adults as for children. And this one is.

I have always loved the story of Rapunzel and I can't believe it took Disney this long to make it (I heard they were thinking about it in the 40s...think of how gorgeous that movie would have been!). My NaNo novel last year was even a Rapunzel story.
Even though I am a complete book nerd and one of those people who compares every part of a movie with its book, it's not like that for fairy tales. I guess it's because they have been told so many times that who really knows what the original was? I actually love fairy tales and retellings. But I appreciated some of the things from the "original"/Grimm Brothers' version, especially the healing tears. That has always been one of my favorite parts of the story.

I thought the two leading voice characters did a really great job. At times, Mandy Moore's voice was a little too teenage-girlish (though that is what Rapunzel is), but I thought she did perfect with the songs. They were very Disneyish, though a little more modern than those in "Beauty and the Beast" or "The Little Mermaid." And I loved the songs! Not anything incredible or any future classics, but still very fun. Thanks to Bess, I had downloaded the soundtrack for $3.99 on Amazon, so I already knew the songs. :)
I loved Rapunzel's chameleon and the horse! Neither one of them speak a word in the movie, but they were hilarious and contributed most of the humor to the story.
And the paper lantern scene...so sweet! It was beautiful.

Until next time,

I want to see this SO bad! It looks awesome. And I think Flynn is adorable. :) Hey, I would love to see your story about Rapunzel... if that's something you'd share...:-) I love fairy-tale retellings.
ReplyDeleteOh, I *really* want to see this too! It looks great. Thanks for the fun review, Kristin! :)
ReplyDeleteI've had this post starred for ages, intending to comment on it after I posted my own Tangled review. Great review. This movie earns instant classic status in my book - loved the look of it, the story, the characters - it was all so wonderful!!
